H2S Training for the Oil & Gas Industry
The H2S Clear for Energy training equips workers in general industries with an essential understanding of the risks associated with Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and the necessary precautions, tools, and controls for working safely in H2S-prone environments.
This course satisfies the classroom requirements set by ANSI Z390.1. The PEC H2S Clear for Energy program is a premier industry-recognized course that addresses the lethal dangers of hydrogen sulfide.
Delivered through a comprehensive, instructor-led, 4-hour session, it provides participants with vital knowledge and practices for navigating environments with potential H2S exposure.
Hydrogen Sulfide, or H2S, is often referred to as the “Silent Killer” because it is invisible and odorless. Its potent effects can be fatal with just a single inhalation.
The primary route of H2S exposure is inhalation, as the gas is quickly absorbed by the lungs. Individuals might detect the characteristic “rotten egg” smell of hydrogen sulfide at lower concentrations.
However, with prolonged exposure to low levels or higher concentrations, one’s ability to smell the gas diminishes, meaning that reliance on the sense of smell to detect the presence of hydrogen sulfide is unreliable.

Which Industries Need H2S Training?
H2S Clear for Energy provides workers with essential awareness of the dangers of H2S, along with the necessary precautions, tools, and procedures for safely working around rigs, pipelines, refineries, storage tanks, tankers, and terminals.
Oil & Gas Industry: Upstream, Midstream, Downstream
Activities include oil and natural gas extraction at wells, H2S removal at refineries, and the transport of unrefined petroleum via pipelines and tankers. Specific areas include Shale Shaker Areas, Fluid Treatment Areas, Rig Floor, Belle Nipple, Mud Tanks, Mud Pump Areas, Wellhead, Cellar, Drilling Floor, Pump Houses, Gas Processors, and storage and transport facilities such as tanks, trucks, barges, and rail cars.
Underground Natural Gas Storage Facilities are also significant.
Pulp and Paper Industry
H2S emerges as a by-product during the breakdown of wood into pulp, used in the production of paper, fertilizers, glues, dyes, plastic wrap, and other products.
Construction Industry
Includes underground utilities and excavation, particularly in swampy areas or landfills. The Wastewater/Sewage Industry also faces H2S risks in sewers, septic tanks, and sewage treatment plants.
Agriculture Industry
Exposure risks exist in manure tanks, bogs, swamps, and other anaerobic environments where organic material decomposes.
Other Industries
H2S training is also crucial in mining, tunnel operations, coke ovens, coal-fired power plants, and animal processing facilities.
